On Monday, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Enterprise, a more feature-rich version of the popular AI assistant built specifically for businesses. In the blog post, OpenAI said it offered enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access, longer context windows for processing longer inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, and customization options.

OpenAI hasn’t revealed its pricing for ChatGPT Enterprise, instead encouraging people to contact their sales team directly and stating they would be “onboarding as many enterprises as we can over the next few weeks.” The announcement also comes with a low-key name change for Code Interpreter, now known as “Advanced Data Analysis.”

ChatGPT Enterprise has more features than ChatGPT Plus

It would have been easy for OpenAI to just package ChatGPT Plus into group packages, slap on a discount and call it a day. However, ChatGPT Enterprise seems to have a pleasant amount of added features on top of the paid individual subscription plan. Here’s a full breakdown of the features it comes with:

Enterprise-grade security and privacy

Admittedly, “enterprise-grade security” is sort of a nothing statement, so here’s what it means in concrete terms according to OpenAI:

  • Customer prompts and company data are not used for training OpenAI models

  • Data encryption at rest (AES 256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+): This means data is protected on OpenAI’s service and when passing through the internet.

  • Certified SOC 2 compliant: A framework set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for managing customer data for security, availability, processing integrity, and privacy standards.

Features for large-scale deployments

  • Admin console with bulk member management

  • SSO

  • Domain verification

  • Analytics dashboard for usage insights

Additional features

  • Unlimited access to GPT-4 (no usage caps)

  • Higher-speed performance for GPT-4 (up to 2x faster)

  • Unlimited access to advanced data analysis (formerly known as Code Interpreter)

  • 32k token context windows for 4x longer inputs, files, or follow-ups

  • Shareable chat templates for your company to collaborate and build common workflows

  • Free credits to use OpenAI’s APIs if you need to extend OpenAI into a fully custom solution for your organization

How ChatGPT Enterprise solves a lot of pain points

Honestly, this is great news from OpenAI, for so many reasons. Up until now, ChatGPT hasn’t really been scalable for businesses. It only offered individual plans at $20 per person/month, and you had no way of bulk purchasing or managing them. The subscription was linked to the email with no way of decoupling them, which meant they weren’t really transferrable. This new version comes with an admin console and SSO, solving all of that.

Enterprise security is also a big draw for organizations who have been worried about using ChatGPT due to security concerns. That hasn’t apparently stopped over 80% of Fortune 500 companies adopting it anyway, or staff using ChatGPT regardless of bans (read our article on why you should be writing usage policies, not enacting AI bans).

It’s also great that ChatGPT Enterprise comes with a promise not to use your staff prompts for training OpenAI models, as well as data encryption at rest and in transit. The former is a big deal given the risk of accidentally sharing customer and staff’s personal identifying information (PII), or company trade secrets.

Whether or not you can rest easy that this covers every single security threat is another issue, especially since ChatGPT has experienced data breaches before. Your organization should still perform a thorough security review of ChatGPT prior to full adoption, and build resilient processes around AI model use to mitigate any risk.

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT becoming the business norm

The release of ChatGPT Enterprise, and the fact 80% of the most successful organizations are using ChatGPT, means generative AI (GenAI) use is going to become the new normal. To keep up with the competition, you’ll want to make sure you’ve investigated this technology for your business, as well as properly trained your staff in its use to drive business value.
