AWS re:Invent 2022: First impressions from Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian’s keynote

We kicked off day three of re:Invent with a bang as AWS VP of Database, Analytics, and Machine Learning Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian took the stage to drop a few announcements of his own. And our on-the-ground experts had some thoughts:

David Blocher
"Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian’s keynote was all about data and machine learning. He talked a lot about building the connective tissue of AWS. It seems like the building blocks are all in place, and AWS is working really hard to get everything interconnected in a way that makes it easy to use multiple different data services on AWS. He also announced the S3 and Redshift integration, focused on data quality with AWS Glue Data Quality, and discussed new machine learning initiatives. I’m particularly interested to see how the ML No Code solution works and how it can be used throughout organizations."

Jess Alvarez
"Data is usually such a dry subject for me. So being excited about things today was a pretty big deal for me. I’m a big sucker for demos and we had two of them today. There was a super cool one about the new geo-spatial functionality for SageMaker that was awesome. And then one for Amazon DataZone which was really awesome. How quickly she went through that was incredible. And then, of course, Multi-AZ in Redshift made me audibly shout 'Finally!'"

Jeremy Morgan
"Dr. Swami talked about tools, went into performance, and then wrapped it up with security. One of the things that stood out the most for me, aside from all the announcements and features, was some of the ways that they’re using the technology. They created compelling stories around it. The geo-spatial functionality was really cool as a first responder who’s worked on natural disasters. I was watching that thinking it was an amazing use of technology. I was really impressed by some of the demos, too. It seems like AWS is reducing friction for everybody."

Mattias Andersson
"This morning’s keynote on data and machine learning was really interesting. It started off talking about how organizations need to architect their data frameworks so that they’re not rearchitecting them over time. 'Data beats intuition' was a useful quote. And then they did come back to the undifferentiated heavy lifting that they’re going to take on for our sake. They continued on with a bunch of interesting announcements about security and different governance features. They concluded the keynote with an emphasis on education and closing the skills gap to make sure that the people using stuff are able to use it effectively."

Andru Estes
"A few takeaways really caught my eyes and my ears. The first two are tech related. The first is the 50+ connectors for AppFlow, which I think is going to help tremendously with ingesting data from third-party vendors. The next was Amazon Redshift Multi-AZ deployments, and if you work with Redshift, you know how much of a lifesaver that’s going to be.

The last thing I caught was the statement about the 54,000 computer science degree graduates in the US, and then obviously the massive amount of jobs that are coming up. I thought that was pretty mind-blowing at first. But now I’m wondering if there’s less degree graduates because of platforms like Pluralsight and A Cloud Guru, where students can take self-guided learning and gain hands-on experience to learn all the stuff they need for real-world scenarios."
