Getting Started in the Lab Environment
Here are the initial instructions and explanation of the lab environment. Read this while your environment is busy creating itself from nothing. Yes, this violates physics; we know. How fun!
-
Challenge
Emulate
You'll generate a serialized Java payload that executes a command of your choosing, upload it to Tomcat using a partial PUT request, and then force the payload to be deserialized and execute on the Tomcat server—achieving remote code execution.
-
Challenge
Detect
You'll investigate if you have been compromised by reviewing web server logs, searching for unexpected .war files, and checking file modification times in the webapps directory.
-
Challenge
Protect
You'll modify Tomcat’s configuration to ensure that sensitive areas of the server are read-only and that partial PUT requests are disabled.
