Cloning and Connecting to a Cloud SQL Instance

Cloning the databases in your environment is an important step to be prepared for disaster recovery. You can easily failover to the cloned instance without any interruption to the client's experience. In this hands-on lab, you will learn how to create a master instance, clone that instance, and connect to the clone.

  1. Challenge

    Create a Database Instance

    1. From the main console navigation head over to SQL.
    2. Click on the Create Instance.
    3. Choose MySQL.
    4. Set the following values for the instance:
      • Name: patient-records-instance
      • Root pass: 12345
      • Database version: MySQL 5.7
      • The *Machine type should be the Standard selection.
    5. Click Create.

    Enable the Cloud SQL Admin API and Connect to the Database Instance

    1. From the main console navigation, head over to APIs and Services.
    2. Click on Enable APIs and Services.
    3. Search for and select Cloud SQL Admin API.
    4. Click Enable.

    Connect to the Cloud SQL instance:

    1. From the SQL console, click on the patient-records-instance instance.
    2. Head to the Connect to the instance section.
    3. Click on Connect using the Cloud Shell.
    4. You will be prompted with the gcloud sql connect patient-records-instance --user=root --quiet command. Press Enter.
    5. Enter the root password 12345, and press Enter.
    6. You are now logged in to the MySQL instance.

    Create a Database and Table

    1. We will use the Cloud Shell terminal to create a database and a table.

    Create a Clone of Your Instance

    1. In the SQL console, find your instance and click on the three-dot icon at the end of your instance filter tab.
    2. Click on Create Clone.
    3. Once in the Create Clone dashboard, click on Create Clone.

    Connect to Your Clone Instance

    1. From the SQL console, click on the patient-records-instance-clone instance.
    2. Head to the Connect to the instance section.
    3. Click on Connect using the Cloud Shell.
    4. You will be prompted with the gcloud sql connect patient-records-instance-clone --user=root --quiet command. Press Enter.
    5. Enter the root password (12345), and press Enter.
    6. You are now logged in to the MySQL instance.
  6. Challenge

    Verify the Data Has Been Cloned to the Clone Instance

    1. We will confirm the database was cloned and also verify if the table was successfully cloned.
