SOLIDWORKS Essentials - Basic Part Modeling

by Tony Riggs

We need to model a part, but how do we get started? We need to think about what we are going to sketch and what kinds of tools we can use to get everything designed and a 2D drawing created. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.

What you'll learn

We are going to start modeling a sample part, but we need to learn the basics of starting a part, starting a sketch, and what entities we can sketch.

When we are sketching, we need to learn about relationships and how dimensioning can help us go from an under defined sketch to a fully defined sketch.

We will have features that add material and remove material.

Once we are done, we will look at creating a 2D drawing with a front, top, right and isometric view.

Course FAQ

What is SOLIDWORKS?

SOLIDWORKS is a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software for product design engineering. It helps to simulate physical behaviors and properties of all kinds of product designs.

What is part modeling?

Part modeling is the process of creating a virtual prototype of something by modeling each individual part separately, which can then all be assembled together to create the model of the final product. Think of all of the different parts of a car engine for example.

What will I learn in this course?

In this course you will learn about basic part modeling using SOLIDWORKS. Some of the main topics that are covered include:

  • Creating your part with design intent
  • Starting a sketch properly
  • Sketching lines
  • Automatic relations and cursor feedback
  • Sketch relations
  • Dimensions
  • Extrusion
  • Removing material, fillets, and holes
  • Creating drawings
  • much more
Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to learn the basics of part modeling in SOLIDWORKS. Aspiring product design engineers will find this course especially useful.

Are there prerequisites to this course?

Nope! All you need is the desire to learn about SOLIDWORKS part modeling and hopefully a bit of an imagination.
