Password Minder 1.5.0.10 Released

This is a minor update. Here's what was changed (from the readme file):

Incorporated a patch from Richard Howells to give
you the option to turn on/off the "Always On Top" behavior
of the main form. I still recommend not keeping PWM in
memory all the time - only run it when you need it to keep
your master key safe. I also used adjusted the Auto-gen
password dialog to be more reasonable: it now by default
specifies a 12-char password, not the 20 it used to - most
websites can't handle a password that long. I also removed
the lower case 'l' and punctuation, with a button that allows
you to add back in the puncutation marks if you want.
One last minor thing - I added AcceptsReturn=true to the
notes editor so it won't disappear when you press Enter :)

You can access the latest version from our tools page.

Update: fixed broken link (sorry, readers!)

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your Password Minder utility.

However, I noticed a few issues that I thought I'd bring to your attention.

1) It won't launch without installation of the VS2008 C++ redist. If this is intentional, you might like to include this in your installation notes.

2) The "send password to another window" feature doesn't work on Visa (SP1).

3)It won't launch on x64. It should be able to run as a 32-bit app on x64 under WOW64. However, it's not working. Suspect the assembly needs to be marked as 32-bit only (ie I'm suggesting that it's failing as it's trying to run 64-bit and some of your interop won't work in 64-bit without code changes).

Regards,
Lucas

Hi Keith,

I have modified PWM to use SQL Server instead XML files (import/export still uses files) to store the records and settings.

Are there any security problems using SQL instead of files that would make your application less secure?

Thanks

Gary

Keith --

1. Could you post an x64 version of Password Minder as the 32-bit version posted fails to start under Vista x64 SP1.

2. Is there anyway to fill in the password field of a prompt under Vista SP1 which uses the new Credential UI and Credential SSP? When we attempt to paste a password into such a field nothing happens. An example is attempting to save RDP credentials using a .RDP file for a remote desktop connection on Vista SP1. Basically because Microsoft now prevents CONTROL-V from working, we can't use random passwords for our critical accounts anymore which has lowered security here.

Thanks

Possibly not the venue for this question, but could not find an obviously better one. I've been using PWM for several years happily. I was just issued a new machine at work, running WinXP SP2. On my new box, PWM 1.5.0.10 will no longer run. It crashes immediately with error "An unhandled exception ('System.IO.FileLoadException') occurred in pwm.exe [3792]." Furthermore, at one point I somehow managed to get it to run, but it would not import any of my existing xml data files, even though I know the passwords. It just kept prompting me for the password over and over, as though I were entering the wrong one. Any help or advice appreciated.

More on PWM crash: System.IO.FileLoadException was unhandled

Message: Could not load file or assembly 'NativeHelpers, Version=1.5.0.4, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800736B1)

(Reinstalling the application does not fix the problem.)

Hi Keith,

First thanks for the password minder utility program. I've been using it for quit a while now. However I just repaved my machine and would like to install it again.

The link to the tools page up above (www.pluralsight.com/tools.aspx) does not seem to work. I get a 404 page. Is the password minder still available?

Greetings .

The "tools page" link appears to be a broken (HTTP 404).

It appears that the tools page is unavailable. Is it possible to download Password Minder from an alternative location?

The tools page is unavailable and has been for several days. Is there any alternative download pages?

Thanks,

For those of you running on Vista SP1 x64 (and maybe other x64 plaforms) running the following allowed me to run the 32 bit version of password minder just fine:

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\x64\CorFlags.exe" pwm.exe /32bit+

The location of CorFlags was I believe from a default installation of Visual Studio 2008.

Hey Keith,

Looks like the link to the tools page, www.pluralsight.com/tools.aspx, is down...I'm getting a 404.

For those of you who have been looking for the tools page(and for Keith's wiki and book), they are still available at the url for the legacy site: "alt.pluralsight.com/tools.aspx"

And for his book:

"alt.pluralsight.com/.../HomePage.html"

And for his wiki:

"alt.pluralsight.com/.../Home%20Page.html"

To everyone who have troubles running it in x64: if you know the Visual Studio Kung-Fu you just have to recompile the Password Minder with proper targets. Worked nice for me.
