Well the answer isn't actually here but I can tell you where to find it.

The Windows Mobile team has posted the history and explanation of the Windows Mobile "X" in their post The Emperor Has No Close.

I had always wondered that - thanks Jim. Now my only question is - why do I get 'not enough memory to launch application' occasionally if they manage the memory so well?
