Thanks to everyone who came to today's webcast. We had a great turnout - Thanks!!
Here's the follow up materials
A couple of important points to remember
- The Palm Treo 700w Smartphone is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition
- Technically what makes it a Pocket PC is the version of the Windows Mobile platform it runs
- In practice the difference basically comes down to the fact that Pocket PC's have a larger display and accept input through a touch screen
- Windows Mobile Smartphones use only the keyboard (including navigation keys) for input
- As a developer this means a few things
- You need to install the Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK for Pocket PCs (not the version for SmartPhones)
- In Visual Studio 2005 you create a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Device Application (not SmartPhone)
- You can include things like a Button or Context Menus that require screen input
If you'd like to get some hands on experience similar to the project demonstrated today you have a couple of choices.
- You can checkout this Hands-On Lab. It's very similar to the project we created today except it targets Windows Mobile 5.0 SmartPhone. You can adapt it the Treo 700w by creating a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Device Application instead of SmartPhone. To match the screen size of the Treo 700w you'll need to change the applicaiton Form's FormFactor property to “Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Square“ (or “Treo Pocket PC” if you've installed the Treo 700w Emulator). If you have some extra time, you might consider playing around with the user interface a bit to take advantage of the extra screen real estate provided by the Treo 700w
- If you don't have Visual Studio 2005 installed, you can do the Hands-On Lab I mention above as a Virtual Lab. As a Virtual Lab, you do your work on a remote virtual machine that already has all the environment properly configured. All you need is a browser.
And a few other resources you might find helpful
I'll post the replay URL for the today's Webcast (Webinar in Palm parlance) as soon as it's available.
If you have any other questions or would like to share your experiences, please don't be shy about posting feedback.
