Christmas has come very early this year because this is what oh so many of us have been asking for: A SQL database that runs on Mobile Devices, Tablets, and Desktops, has a common data format, and does not require the installation of a Windows Service.
The bottom line is that Paul Flessner, Microsoft Sr. VP, announced this morning that the Windows Mobile database, SQL Mobile, is becoming SQL Everywhere. As part of the change SQL Everywhere will run across not only Windows Mobile devices and Tablets as SQL Mobile did; it now supports Desktops as well.
You'll recall that I posted last month the list of SQL Mobile supported platforms. Things are so much simpler now, if it's a Windows Mobile device, Windows Tablet or Windows Desktop, SQL Express supports it.
SQL Everywhere opens up incredible opportunities for Windows Mobile developers and other Smart Client developers.
For Windows Mobile developers, SQL Everywhere makes building applications that have both a desktop and mobile device component much easier. This is because the databases are simply files with the same format on all platforms and the databases are easily copied between machines. As a result, transferring data between a device and a desktop is a simple file transfer.
For other smart client developers, SQL Everywhere will make having a database on an end user's machine much more practical. As SQL Mobile has always been, SQL Everywhere is DLL-based rather then being service like SQL Server 2005. Being a DLL that simply loads into the calling program eliminates the hurdles involved with installing and maintaining a windows-service-based database on an end user's machine.
The release of SQL Everywhere opens up so many opportunities. I'm sure we'll being hearing much more information about SQL Everywhere in the near future. It's a very good day. J
