IE 7: New Tab Opens Home Page

I found myself expecting that opening a new 'blank' tab in IE 7 would open the home page, as does opening a new window or opening the browser for the first time does. However, by default IE 7 (and other fine browsers) open a blank page.

If you have this expectation too, in IE 7
  • Select "Internet Options…" from the "Tools" menu.
  • On the "General" tab, in the "Tabs" section, choose "Settings".
  • Check "Open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page".
  • Select "OK" * 2.

Check the box to 'never show this page again' after performing the above in the "Welcome to Tabbed Browsing page, that will solve the problem :)

( Just posting this here because Google seems to rate this page highly and I came across this page looking for this exact solution, may as well leave it for other people to read ^^ )

Here's a link that explains this (and related) settings and why the team chose the defaults they did.

After choosing the option to "Open home page instead of blank tabs", the next time you click on a new tab and get the Welcome to Tabbed Browsing page, check the box that says to "never show me this page again." Close that page. The next new tab you click on should load your home page.

I had this problem as well, fixed it by doing this:

Tools --> Internet Options --> Advanced Tab --> Reset Internet Explorer Settings

Home page opens for tabbed pages.

Regedit:
HKEY_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Add:
DWORD: RunOnceHasShown (1)
DWORD: RunOnceComplete (1)

Edit:

String: Default_Page_URL: Your site
String: Start_Page: Your Site.

This will take away the annoying Run Once Page when users logon.

Still can not seem to get the google web page removed from default home page on 1st run IE7.
I have found when the user logs off and logs back on the "users" default home page start to appear again.
If anyone has a way around this please advise.....

This worked for me only after I uninstalled the Google toolBar.

Tools --> Internet Options --> Advanced Tab --> Reset Internet Explorer Settings

yeah, as mentioned above, the procedure below will always open new tabs in your home page instead of that stupid about::blank page:

1) Tools > internet options > Tabs Settings > and check off "Open Home page for new tabs instead of a blank page"

2) Close internet explorer, and re-launch it. Start a new tab by clicking that small tab thingy beside the current tab or right clicking current tab and selecting "New tab".

Anyhow, when you have a new tab and you see that blank page, there is a CHEC BOX on the bottom that says something like:

"Do not open this page again ..."

Check it off and click SAVE.

3) Close internet explorer and re-launch. Open a new tab and it should open in your homepage now.

Enjoy!

To either enable or disable the showing of the about:Tabs page when you open a new tab you have to modify the registry. Navigate to this key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing

If you want to disable about:Tabs showing up everytime you make a new tab you must create a new DWORD Value named "ShowTabsWelcome" with a value of "0" (without quotes ofcourse)

If you want to enable about:Tabs just delete "ShowTabsWelcome" or change the value to "1"

You can also enable your homepage on a new tab here by creating a DWORD value named "UseHomepageForNewTab" and give it a value of "1" (again without quotes)

Good Luck!

This method would never work for me so here is my solution (that finally fixed it for me)

1. Create your homepage
2. Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Tabs -> Settings -> "open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page"

At this point - it wont work, so....

3. Open a new tab.
4. Check the box to 'never show this page again'.
5. Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Tabs -> Settings -> Reset Internet Explorer Settings -> Reset.
6. Close and re-open IE.
7. Open a new tab.
8. Check the box to 'never show this page again'.
9. Homepage should now show up!

I had the problem "new tab will not open in home page".
Solution was for me.
The following registry key was missing.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\TabbedBrowsing
DWORD was missing..ShowTabsWelcome..value 0
If you right click ou can enter this missing DWORD.

Thank you very much Rob Ashton; I feel stupid for not seeing that little check box for "Dont show this page again" or whatever it says.  I kept thinking it was a bug where the option "Open home page for new tabs instead of blank page" didn't work or something.

New tabs open to my homepage now w/ no problem.  Thanks again.
