SOX and Business Rules

Perhaps because IANAL, my imagination wasn't good enough to see why the European Business Rules Conference [1] would have a tutorial and a "special event" on regulatory compliance.

Then I read Regulatory Compliance Demystified: An Introduction to Compliance for Developers [2]. Besides reading like an advertisement for security and privacy features, it points out:

"Change management is a critical part of Sarbanes-Oxley because the act specifically requires companies to notify the SEC of any material changes to the process that governs the flow of financial data. This is only applicable to you if you are writing a system that governs the flow of financial data and that can be configured in ways to change that flow."

I'm beginning to understand.

Compliance drives the use of business rules for lots of reasons - ease (and management) of change, an ability to show what was done very explicitly and an opportunity for those who understand the regulations to collaborate on their implementation. So much so, in fact, I have a whole section on compliance on the blog
http://edmblog.fairisaac.com/weblog/compliance/index.html
Enjoy.
