Notepad2

Last week at our .NET Campsight event, we had a presentation by Oscar Omar Garza Santos of the IIS team talking about some of the new features coming up in IIS 7 (this is a regular feature of these events, by the way - in addition to 10hrs /day of lecture and lab we have product group members drop by and present some of the stuff only they can tell you about :). Anyway, during his talk I noticed he was showing a configuration file in a window entitled Notepad2. A quick search revealed this nice little program, Notepad2, which is a notepad replacement that supports syntax highlighting, rectangular selection, and select-tab-indent among other features. Best of all it comes in a single .exe that's only about 500k with no dependencies to speak of. This may have to take the place of emacs when I'm doing demos without VS.NET, now if I could only get 'C-u 10 M-x hanoi' to work in it...

Yes, this is a great little Notepad replacement. I have using it for about 8 months now and would not go back.

Scott Hanselman (www.computerzen.com) has Notepad2 on his 2005 Ultimate Developer Tools list.

I have renamed Notepad2.exe to n.exe and put it in my path, saves some typing.

Also, have Notepad2 integrated into the Windows shell - http://weblogs.asp.net/pleloup/archive/2004/05/12/130566.aspx.

for all of us Ruby guys...
http://wesnerm.blogs.com/net_undocumented/2005/07/notepad2_with_r.html

To get it to be a complete replacement of Notepad.exe

copy notepad2.exe c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\notepad.exe
copy notepad2.exe c:\windows\system32\dllcache\notepad.exe
copy notepad2.exe c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe
copy notepad2.exe c:\windows\notepad.exe

Fully agree on the usefulness of Notepad2. I was using Metapad, which is great but does not support XML files.
If only Notepad2 would use the current word as its search string, I'd be fully happy.

Notepad2 is good but I ended up using Notepad++ which does pretty much the same thing. Find it at http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net. It's got some nicer integration into the Windows Shell and a few features notepad2 misses.

I now use Notepad++ to replace Notepad2 (and Notepad, of course).

Here's a Notepad++ launcher :

:) Hey guys take a look @ http://www.vim.org.
I keep it as my second editor (on left monitor :)) A little complicated but It really saving huge amount of keystrokes during my day.
Also its integrating with perl, so I'm using templates run engine to type repetable code as code-template on fly.

The BDV Notepad is great! I use it for a long time, it has a lot of unique functions for regular users. Here it is: http://www.badevlad.com/bdvnotepad_en.htm

AFAIK, the best notepad replacement is notepad++, since it supports the MDI (Multi-Document Interface).

Notepad++ is good, but Notepad2 is better because its simple, lightweight, and convenient.

I'm getting tired of notepad2. I'll probably move on to notepad++ because I oftentimes need to copy and paste between multiple files.
