RSS Version History

Apparently, Dave Winer had some issues with my history of RSS (see the answer to the “Which RSS version is the most current?“ question). This prompted him to write his own RSS timeline for the records.

I'm sure Dave's account is more thorough than mine, but I was only focusing on the specs with “RSS“ in the name. The RSS version story is confusing enough already.

It's interesting that Dave's timeline starts with the scriptingNews format in 12/97. If Dave was going for thoroughness, I'm not sure why he left out Microsoft's CDF (a very RSS-like news format with channel and item elements) that shipped back in 3/97, 9 months before the first scriptingNews format.

Don's RSS version history highlights this ommission. At least one other person has noticed CDF's place in history and did a good job poking some fun.

This is also quite interesting.

Using Group Policies is the best way to restrict it because they will not change anything.
