Is UDDI Dead?

Service Station, by Aaron Skonnard

The fact that Karsten hasn't posted since last August suggests that it is. Seriously, I used to find hope in UDDI for dealing with one simple use case: helping clients deal with nomad endpoints. But the lack of adoption and decrease in hype really has me wondering if it will ever go anywhere. In a recent conversation with a friend, we jokingly concluded that UDDI has become a successful Yellow Pages; the only problem is most of the listings don't have telephones.

It also seems like WS-Addressing could help displace the need for a directory service, at least for my use case, if redirects are all handled on the backend. I'd love to hear other opinions.

I think public UDDI has been a dissapointment. It seems that there would still be potential in the enterprise for UDDI. The driving requirement will only come when enterprises have more WS endpoints than they can track easily.

I've been tracking UDDI since 1.0 and I've been waiting to recommend it to a client until I see that they have some "phones hooked up".

I've continued my comment on my weblog:

I spoke with KarstenJ about UDDI at the PDC03 he is off on a Longhorn project far removed from the world of UDDI. If you look at the US federal XML registry project ( http://xml.gov ) it seems to be going ebXML registry with linkages to UDDI. If you do look at the highlevel publicaly accessable UDDI implementations like the excellent Danish site at http://isb.oio.dk you'll notice that they really have not added much value to the base MS UDDI implementation and people tend to use it as a company placeholder.

My own hope had been to see some UDDI v3 implementations with demonstrated replication between two servers. Dunno is this possible? I mean without that UDDI is limited.

I asked AndyH of MS (ADSI guru) where MS is going and all he woudl say is that their UDDI is part of their overall Longhorn directories strategy but no further details.

I agree though without someone like KarstenJ actively promoting UDDI or even blogging/writting about UDDI then I see no one with the passion to move it forward...

I wouldn't give up on it (yet) - it's still very new. Corporate enterprises are still grappling with web services, let alone cataloging it with UDDI.

I forgot that Karsten moved from the UDDI team and is now working for Indigo. I guess his lack of UDDI posts doesn't mean anything. ;-)

UDDI has not settled well in the enterprise, although it is over fours old. Every now and then, there is a new article or a blog post saying that UDDI is dead, or that UDDI has always been a hype. Then there are those who say why UDDI is necessary for categorizing services, and how UDDI and SOA are going to change the enterprise world by way of UDDI's dynamic discovery capabilities. The truth lies somewhere in between....

UDDI always seemed like a pipe dream, and a strange pipe at that. I never really saw it catching on, and it looks like that more than ever now.
