Windows Media Center Edition 2005

I installed MCE 2005 this weekend. Mostly subtle differences so far, although it looks like I can't put DACLs on shares anymore.

One definite upside is the new theme that replaces the four year old Luna theme with a shiny new WMA10-ish look and feel.  I so want this theme for my non-MCE laptop.

This theme is the Royale theme from MCE, it's just called Energy Blue Theme Pack, and more or less related to a Tablet PC. However, it ought to work fine on a regular SP2 box.

Fairly easy to do, I've got the energy blue theme running on my regular desktop.

Just copy the %windows%\Resources\Themes\Royale directory from your MCE machine to the other machine, then copy the %windows%\Resources\Themes\Royale.theme file to the equivalent location on the other machine.

Now select the 'Energy Blue' theme option in the theme combo box of Display Properties.

I'm guessing this is just simple file sharing is turned on. I'm running MCE2005 and I can put DACL's on shares.

I upgraded my Gateway MCE 2004 system to 2005 the weekend before last and this past weekend I added a LinkSys Media Center Extender. It's working great. In a few weeks, I should have my dual tuner card (Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-500MCE) and then I'll be set for a while. That is, unless they actually put up the proposed antenna to get HD OTA broadcasts to my area. Then I'll have to think about an OTA HD tuner card. Oh what fun. Ya know I have been putting up with a bit of the downside of MCE (open system that crashes occassionally) for a year but now it is paying off in terms of upgrade-ability. :-)

You can install the Energy Blue Theme Pack referenced above on standard Windows XP. With WinZip installed, right click the EXE, select Winzip > Extract to Here.

Install files to these locations:
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\royale.theme
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Royale\royale.msstyles
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Royale\Shell\shellstyle.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Royale\Wallpaper\energybliss.jpg

Select Energy Blue Theme in Control Panel > Display Properties > Themes.
